1. By bus
Buses run directly through the North Panamerican Highway in a smooth and straight road most of the way. Big part of the view during the journey is desert and the Pacific Ocean to the left. The trip takes about 10 hours. Note that Lima does not have a Central Bus Station. You have to take the bus from the terminal of each bus company.

1. The Historic Center
Trujillo was founded by the Spanish conquerors in 1534. It still holds dozens of churches dating back to the XVII century. There is also a big display of colonial and republican mansions. These last ones from the XIX century show their typical balconies with barred windows. In general, it´s a great place for architecture lovers.
2. The archaeological sites
- Chan Chan, a UNESCO World Heritage Site is a treasure for history lovers. Situated in the desert just at 5 kms from the center of Trujillo, it was the biggest pre-Columbian city in the Americas and the largest adobe city in the world. It was the center of the Chimu Kingdom ca. 1300 AD. In an extension of 20 sq. km. the citadel contains impressive walls with artistic carved designs. The place holds military bunkers, large reservoirs and religious altars.

These were built by the Moche civilization around 450 CE. Just the Temple of the Sun, a step pyramid of 43 mts high, built with more than 130 million adobe bricks is considered the largest pre-Columbian adobe structure in the Americas.
3. Huanchaco
This favorite spot for surfers at only half an hour from Trujillo is one of the World Surfing Reserves. 3000 years ago inhabitants of the area were already surfing and fishing in reed watercrafts which nowadays are still manufactured and used.
