How to get to Rainbow Mountain

How to get to Rainbow Mountain

Rainbow Mountain (Vinicunca) is becoming the second most visited attraction after Machupicchu in Cusco. However, it was only “discovered” in 2015 due to the effect of global warming. This melted the ice and snow which  covered the mountain for thousands years.  At 17,000 ft (5,200 m ) a.s.l. its majestic and breathtaking beauty is waiting for you.

What to do and how to go

Our first recommendation is to keep this attraction for the end of your entire trip in Cusco. The road upwards is not that difficult. What makes it very challenging is the altitude. You need to aclimatized beforehand. Therefore, we strongly advise you to go with a qualified tourist agency. You will enjoy the trekking much better feeling in good hands.

A visit to Rainbow Mountain takes a day trip from Cusco. Be ready to leave at 4:00 am which is the usual pick-up hour from hotels.

The Peruvian Government opened a new road with easier access on May 2018.  Since then the trek starts in the town of Cusipata, about 1 hour and 40 minutes from Cusco.  From there it takes two hours trekking to reach the Rainbow Mountain. You can also ride horse. The starting trek altitude is at 15,091 ft (4,600 m) and reaches its summit in about three hours at 17,000 ft (5,200 m). By no mean you should underestimate this altitude so be aware of taking precautions.

When to go

It´s cold all through the year. However, the best time to visit is during the dry season which runs from April to November. The radiant sun highlights the colors of the mountain and you will be able to take your best pictures back home.
