1. Waterfalls

Ahuashiyacu
Located at only half an hour by car from the city, these lovely scenic waterfalls are a must to visit. The road up there is beautiful with vibrant nature and multicolored butterflies everywhere. It is a place to take great pictures. The waterfalls are impressive and you may not resist the impulse to swim, so take along a swimming suit and good tennis. Huacamaillo
If you like an adventurous trekking then the route to Huacamaillo is for you. Get a guide from a tour agency in Taarapoto to take you. You will reach the town of San Antonio de Cumbaza, about 11 miles (18 km) from Tarapoto. From there you will start the trekking which may take between one hour and two depending on your physical fitness. The magnificent view of nature through all the way will be your highlight in your trip to Tarapoto. Wear boots taking in mind that you have to cross the river. The waterfall is high and with a good swimming pool. It will not be as crowded as Aguashiyacu so you may enjoy your time more. Do not forget to carry mosquito repellent and your swimming suit. This beautiful lagoon, not so much blue as green is in El Sauce, 1 hour and a half from Tarapoto. Part of the route includes crossing the Huallaga river on a ferry.
